Hockney started using his iphone as his medium in 2008 and switched over to the ipad in 2010. The artist has a history of embracing new technology for arts sake - see his pieces "Tennis" from 1989 that was put together from a 144 page fax sent to the British Museum. Hockney especially likes working with his mac products because the backlights makes the colors in the works seductively vibrant. At first he was only emailing them to friends, and soon they were being forwarded to many others. He was asked by several galleries to put the exhibit on, but he chose PB-YSL because they were willing to show the works in their original format and did not ask to try to reproduce anything for sale.
